End of an Era – and a Confident Step Forward for Agtrans

After 13 years of shared hard work, growth, and good humour, Agtrans co-founder Phil D’Ath is retiring. His departure marks the end of an era — but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the South Taranaki-based craneage and heavy haulage company.

For customers and suppliers, it’s very much business as usual: the same trusted team, the same dependable service, and the same commitment to getting the job done safely and efficiently.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader

The Agtrans story began in 2012 when CJ Mahony and Phil D’Ath decided to join forces. CJ, who had been leasing machinery and transport equipment, met Phil through local work on his family’s farm. When Phil returned from Australia and was looking for a new direction, CJ suggested he put one of his under-used trucks to work — and a partnership was born.

“There was never a big master plan – We just took one step at a time, said yes to opportunities, and worked out how to make it happen,” says CJ.

Originally focused on agricultural transport — moving tractors and equipment for local farmers — the business quickly evolved. Within months they invested in a Hiab truck, and demand for lifting and transport services took off. What began as a small rural venture soon grew into a full-service craneage and heavy haulage company, proudly servicing commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects across the region.

A Strong Team for the Future

While Phil’s retirement represents change, CJ says the transition has been smooth thanks to the strength of the Agtrans team.

“We’ve built such a capable group – the team gels well, and knows what it takes to deliver for our customers,” he explains.

Over recent years, Agtrans has deliberately grown its management structure to ensure continuity and leadership depth. Logan, who joined the company in 2017 in a Health & Safety role, has become a Director on Phil’s departure, and now oversees much of the day-to-day operations and safety systems. ‘Big Phil’ Harrison has stepped up into a project coordination and contract management role, filling some big shoes with energy and enthusiasm.

“It’s been great to see people develop and take on more responsibility,” CJ says. “Our customers are seeing the benefits — the same responsive service, with new faces taking the lead.”

Business as Usual — the Agtrans Way

For Agtrans’ loyal customers and suppliers, the message is simple: nothing changes except the date on the calendar. The team continues to deliver the same reliable lifting and transport services, with an eye for innovation and safety that has set them apart from the beginning.

Agtrans’ approach to “working smarter, not harder” is seen in its use of advanced technology and in-house engineering. One example is a custom-built 12-tonne digger converted into a remote-operated crane — used for installing power poles and cell towers in hard-to-reach places.

“It’s about finding smarter ways to do things.

We’ve always wanted to be the best at what we do, not necessarily the biggest or cheapest,” says CJ.

Continuing the Journey

With steady work lined up for the months ahead, CJ says the company’s focus remains on the same foundations that built its success: responsiveness, safety, and local service.

“We’ve never stood still. Agtrans has always evolved by responding to opportunity — and that won’t change,” he says.

As for his long-time business partner, CJ has respect and well-wishes;

“Phil’s got an adventurous spirit, and I know he’s ready for what’s next — enjoy the ride, mate.”
